Purpose:
Used primarily in endodontics for root canal treatment to help with:
- Cleaning and debridement of root canals
- Removal of the smear layer (the thin layer of debris on canal walls after instrumentation)
- Facilitating easier instrumentation during chemo-mechanical preparation
Mechanism of Action:
EDTA acts as a chelating agent by binding calcium ions, which leads to decalcification of dentin and helps dissolve the inorganic components of the smear layer.
Usage Notes:
- EDTA should be alternated with Sodium Hypochlorite irrigation, which targets the organic debris, for complete removal of the smear layer.
- Improves cleaning efficiency and enhances bonding of root canal sealers by opening dentinal tubules.
